Queensland To Invest $14 Billion In Health Infrastructure Projects

On Tuesday, 26th March, Peter McClennan, General Manager at The Austrans Group, attended the briefing in Townsville where it was announced that Queensland is set to invest $14 Billion in infrastructure projects to relieve some of the pressure on the health system. This will be the biggest capital investment in health in Queensland’s history and is much needed by the community.

With Austrans extending their service in Northern Queensland, they are constantly keeping an eye on emerging trends and shifts in the industry. With brand new facilities and updates, Austrans is committed to being a part of the changes.

Infrastructure projects

Capacity Expansion Program – Queensland Health is embarking on a comprehensive Capacity Expansion Program aimed at adding approximately 2,200 additional beds to healthcare facilities between 2024 and 2028. It is projected to generate over 22,000 employment opportunities within the construction sector, thereby contributing significantly to the local economy.

Satellite Hospitals – The plan is for seven satellite hospitals to be built in South East Queensland to access better healthcare. Each satellite hospital will offer a comprehensive array of medical services aimed at alleviating the strain on emergency departments. Among the services provided will be dedicated minor injury and illness clinics offering walk-in, urgent care facilities. The designated locations for these satellite hospitals include Redlands, Caboolture, Ripley, Tugun, Kallangur, Eight Mile Plains, and Bribie Island. While several of these hospitals have already been built, the remaining ones are scheduled to commence operations later this year, promising enhanced healthcare accessibility for the community.

Accelerated Infrastructure Delivery Program – This initiative aims to expedite the establishment of essential healthcare infrastructure, including the addition of 289 beds across seven projects within the Metro South, Gold Coast, and Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Services regions by the latter half of 2024. Furthermore, plans are underway for the construction of a sub-acute facility in West Moreton slated for completion in 2025.

Sustaining Capital Program – To efficiently replace and renew Queensland Health’s existing asset base. It seeks to optimise facilities and equipment to ensure they are fit to maintain business and service delivery.

Building Rural and Remote Health Program – This initiative is geared towards bolstering healthcare delivery in regional areas by enhancing or replacing ageing infrastructure. By modernising healthcare facilities in rural and remote communities, Queensland Health endeavours to ensure that these areas have access to high-quality healthcare services
